The Element of Surprise

This past weekend was different than we had originally thought or planned. We had a list of To Do's for Saturday and were thinking our weekend would be pretty uneventful and relaxed. Friday evening Kane got a call from his grandfather "inviting" us to dinner Saturday evening in Knoxville. The invite was sort of a joke since we are in Atlanta where WE live, not in Knoxville where HE lives. Kane's sister and brother-in-law had planned a trip to Knoxville and made arrangements with Daddo and Opa (both of Kane's grandfathers) while they were in town.

After Kane got off the phone and told me why he had called...I said, "We should just go!" I thought it would be fun to just arrive at the restaurant where they were eating and surprise Daddo and take him up on his invitation. So, after a couple minutes we decided we would make the quick, spontaneous trip to Knoxville to see Daddo and surprise him. We put the things on our to do list off for another week and packed up some stuff Saturday morning and headed north. We let Kane's parents in on our plan and we arrived at their house around lunch on Saturday. We spent the day relaxing there and then got ready for dinner. We arrived at the restaurant a few minutes after everyone else and Daddo and Opa were both there along with Kane's sister, brother in law and Dad. It was fun walking over to the table and just standing there waiting to be noticed. It took the grand-dad's a few minutes to realize we were there---and then it hit them---that we had really driven all the way from Atlanta to meet them for dinner. It was a good evening and great to spend time with some family. We also enjoyed some time on Sunday relaxing at Kane's mom and dad's house and then headed back home Sunday evening. Sometimes it's good (and fun) to be SPONTANEOUS!

I remember once when the 9 of us were hangin' out. The grownups got to talking about Steak and Shake. We sacked you 5 up and poured your sleeping bodies into our van and drove to Columbia, MO, the nearest S & S. We did wake you up (maybe one was still sleepin'--ask your Mama) when we got there. Spontaneous is cool.
Now, it could have been Schlotsky's and Topeka, KS, but the point is still valid. Yum!
Can't remember my username, but I am Kathy Nelzen. (Tat much I'm sure of.)

Maybe a sponteneous little trip to Bristol would be nice. :-) Glad you had a good time and got to surprise everyone. Love ya.

Dad

PS For Kathy: Every time we come to Kansas City and drive through Columbia, we think about those 1:00 am hamburgers.
