A Random Story

Kane sold a few of his old video games on ebay last week...so that means that I had to make 2 trips to the post office to ship the games...1 trip yesterday for the buyers who paid rather quickly once the auctions ended and another today to ship the games to the slower paying buyers.

So, I went yesterday with several padded envelopes, a box, a stroller and a baby in tow. As I rounded the corner to the front of the building there was a man sitting there with a big bucket of fresh flowers...that he was trying to sell to passerbys.

As he saw that my hands were full he jumped up and went to open the door for me...and I thank him. He replies with a, "help me out if you can"...(meaning, I'm selling flowers and if you can buy one from me I would really appreciate it---especially since I am being SO nice to you by helping you out with the door). When I finish with my post office business I come out remembering that I have NO cash on me, so I am glad when I see that the flowers are there, but he is gone---I thought I would be able to leave without an explanation. About then he comes running across the street--"Can you help me out?"...as I am almost to my car I tell him, "I have no cash, I'm really sorry". He shrugs his shoulders and turns around. I leave and head home.

This morning I have several more games to mail, so back to the post office I go. I also had to go to the grocery store. As I'm driving and approach the post office, I see the same gentlemen with the same bucket filled with new flowers. Apparently this is his "spot" to work. So, I just drive by, realizing that I still do not have any cash...and that the guy might remember me from yesterday and if I used the "no cash" reason again, it would seem more like an excuse rather than a reason...you know?! (even though it was still true that I didn't have any cash)

So, as I pass by I think, maybe he'll have moved on by the time I am finished buying my groceries---and if not, well, I decided I would just get a little cash back at the grocery store and I would just buy a single rose from him today---since he was so helpful yesterday. I called Kane just to ask him if that's what I should do--he agreed.

I drove back to the post office and the flower guy was still there manning his post. So, I got out of the car and put Mara Kate on my hip, got my envelopes and headed in. As I passed, I asked--"how much are your roses?" "2 for $3", he says. I ask, "How much for just 1? "$2". So, I walk on in to mail my things and on the way out I decide it would just be worth it to buy 2---I mean, it would help him out and would brighten up my day in the process.

So, that's what I did. I picked out my 2 very pretty yellow roses and headed home. I put Mara Kate down for a nap and then took some time to make a little arrangement in the small glass vase I bought earlier in the summer while on vacation...and you know...that little arrangement has brightened my day as I have done different things around my house and taken care of my little girl.

Here are a couple pics to brighten YOUR day as well. :)

So, here's a question---Would you have bought the flowers if you were in the same situation?
